Melinda Mollineaux: Cascadura Stories
This section explores the diversity of identities represented in Canadian art today. Artists of many different backgrounds, often multiple backgrounds, create images based on their experiences and heritage. This art shows clearly that there is no single Canadian story; rather, there are many different stories and identities in Canada. The three contemporary artists represented blend traditional and new, past and present, bringing together what they have inherited with new media and technologies. They use a range of new techniques to express new identities.
All three of the artists are working towards representing diversity fairly and accurately. Each artist's work explores questions of expression - how to find a vehicle for communicating their subject matter and their questions about culture, tradition, history, and identity. By working out such issues of identity, this art communicates the complexity of the landscape and history of Canada.
